Visiting the Site of the Mountain Meadows Massacre – One of the Worst Crimes of the Old West

On September 11, 1857, one of the most horrendous crimes of the old west took place, when over 120 members of a wagon train bound for California were killed in cold blood in southwestern Utah. This event, which is little remembered today, became known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The attackers, who comprised of members of a Mormon militia and local Paiutes, were sworn to secrecy after the attack, and despite the large number of men, women, and children who were killed, it would be 20 years before any justice was had for the attacks, and even then only one person would face punishment.
