There are many ways in which a legal system increases its limited authority, but it is most complete

through the consent of the individual. In China, they have “the one child contract.” If you sign it, you

will become eligible for many of the benefits offered by the government, such as free medical care,

schooling, and better paying jobs. If later the mother becomes pregnant and refuses to abort the child,

the family becomes responsible for paying for all the expense of the second child, paying back all the benefits they received for the first child, and often suffering the loss of their present employed position

and pay scale. In America, the pressure to abort a child is often much more subtle.
